Seahawks Get By Falcons...Barely - Anja Crotts for SBS

With the second weekend of NFL games now in review, there were no big surprises to mention. TO and Moss had standout games, those were fun to watch! But who am I kidding, lets focus. My beloved Seahawks had a big win over the Atlanta Falcons. Not a surprising win, for us loyal fans, but not a pretty win either.

Dominating the game after two full quarters, the Hawks walked into the locker room with a score of 21 - 0 in their favor. By the time the clock reached zero in the second half, the score was 21 - 18. There is an old joke from the 80's about how the Seahawks can't perform in the second half, and I guess we realized that here as well. Our offense broke down: Alexander ran terribly and then actually slid into a tackle, Hasslebeck couldn't get the ball to a receiver if he paid them himself, and our defense let down, got tired, and allowed Atlanta's offense to take over. At the end of the game, the one and only thing that allowed us to obtain a 'W' was our defensive stop on an Atlanta fourth down, which was a truly fantastic play. Oh well, we got a win, right? Exactly as said before, no surprise there.

Star quarterback Michael Vick played exceptionally well on an injury that would later take him out of the game. Watching him beat linesman and defensive backs on a rush, turning those corners while acceleratingÉ truly an athletic icon. It's a wonder we could stop him and his high powered offense, but that is what we have learned to do, especially under Ray Rhodes supervision. Speaking of, this was Ray's first game back after being out for the last few weeks due to suffering a mild stroke. It is my firm belief that he was a huge part of an inspiring defense in the first half, and the players must have thought so as well, as they gave him the game ball. Anyway, the Seahawks defense performed last Sunday how the Mariners play when the Yankees are in town - very, very well.

It is necessary to mention Ken Hamlin's play during the length of the game, truly a step in the right direction. I really wish he would play like that more often, dang it's fun to watch! Standout wide receiver Darryl Jackson played well himself, dropped a pass, maybe two, but caught some terribly thrown balls and had some great yardage when it was all said and done.

Case and point - We played well against a good team and outstanding quarterback, and earned a win. If we plan to earn some more of these, we need to step it up a notch and not let our guard down every time the ball is snapped in the second half.

Big game this weekend, and around the league as well. I know that along with wearing some Seahawks attire and watching the game from a lunch break at a convention in LA, I'll most likely be tuning into the San Diego game since they will be playing their now-rivals, the New York Giants. I hope the Chargers bring it, because once Eli gets sacked, the city of San Diego is going to erupt, and it's going to be fun all around.
