Matt Clement Joins the Red Sox
Right-hander Matt Clement and the Boston Red Sox agreed Friday to a three-year deal worth $25.5 million, ESPN's Peter Gammons has confirmed.
Clement's agent, Barry Axelrod, told MLB.com that the deal would become official once Clement has a physical and financial terms are worked out. He also said Clement chose the Red Sox over the Angels, who offered a similar deal; he said during the winter meetings that seven teams -- including the White Sox, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Indians -- were pursuing his client.
"In the end, geography may have taken a prominent place," Axelrod told MLB.com of Clement's decision. "Matt's family and his wife's family are in Pennsylvania. The thought of his dad and other family members being able to easily get to Boston to see him pitch became a big factor for him. Who wouldn't want to pitch in front of their family at Fenway Park?"
Red Sox spokesman Glenn Geffner had no comment.
Clement went 9-13 with a 3.58 ERA and 190 strikeouts in 181 innings for the Chicago Cubs last season. In seven major-league seasons with the Padres, Marlins and Cubs, Clement is 69-75 with a 4.34 ERA.

# The Red Sox are expected to announce the signing of veteran RH reliever Curtis Leskanic before the June 22
game against the Twins, the Boston Herald reported. Leskanic was released last week by the Royals.
The Red Sox will only be obligated to pay Leskanic the pro-rated portion of the major league minimum salary o f $300,000,
which is approximately $200,000.
MRI on Curt Schilling's Sore Right Ankle

BOSTON -- An MRI on Curt Schilling's sore right ankle showed no damage that would require him to miss his next start for the Boston Red Sox.
Schilling is expected to start Tuesday night against the Minnesota Twins as scheduled.
"The condition of his ankle appears stable. We are making no changes in his treatment,'' Red Sox doctor Bill Morgan said Friday. "We will continue to observe his symptoms and act on any changes.''
Schilling has had injections of an anesthetic in his ankle before each of his last few starts.
Manager Terry Francona said he expected Schilling to throw on the side at Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday.
"The MRI came out not worse than we thought, but better,'' Francona said in San Francisco before the Red Sox opened a weekend series against the Giants. "It is good -- great news. He's turned a corner for the better.''
Schilling was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks last offseason and signed to a $37.5 million, three-year contract. He is 8-4 with a 3.31 ERA this season, with 88 strikeouts and 19 walks in 98 innings.

A scan taken on RHP Tim Wakefield's right shoulder blade revealed no breaks July 18. He was hit by a line drive off the bat of Jose Molina in an 8-3 loss to the Angels on July 18. ...

Red Sox Activate Wiliamson

SEATTLE -- The Boston Red Sox activated reliever Scott Williamson from the 60-day disabled list Thursday and designated infielder Earl Snyder for assignment.
Williamson has been sidelined most of the season because of a sore pitching elbow.
"We wouldn't pitch him tonight," Francona said. "I think tomorrow is more his day. But he does feel real good. So we decided to activate him tonight."
The right-hander has pitched in 21 games for the Red Sox this season, compiling a 1.25 ERA over 21 2-3 innings.
Williamson first went on the 15-day disabled list May 21 with right elbow inflammation. He was activated June 11, but went back on the disabled list on July 2 with a right elbow strain.
He missed almost the entirety of the 2001 season after Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow.
The Red Sox got Williamson in a trade with Cincinnati on July 29, 2003, and he was 2-0 with three saves in the playoffs before the Red Sox lost to the Yankees in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.
Snyder played in one game for the Red Sox this season, going 1-for-4. He led the International League in home runs with 36.
