Chicago Cubs News and Notes

Garciaparra stays with Chicago Cubs

CHICAGO -- Nomar Garciaparra enjoyed his brief stay with the Chicago Cubs so much he's coming back.

The five-time All-Star shortstop agreed Tuesday to an $8 million, one-year contract that could rise to $11 million with performance bonuses.

"I really loved playing there, I really loved the experience I had in the short time I was there," he said. "I just felt Chicago is the best place for me. I'm looking forward to going out there and, hopefully, turning this into a long-term relationship."

Garciaparra would make $500,000 each for 535 and 550 plate appearances. He also gets $400,000 each for making 130, 135, 140, 145 and 150 starts.

Other incentives include: $75,000 for an All-Star selection; $75,000 for Gold Glove; $200,000 for league MVP; $150,000 for NLCS MVP; $250,000 for World Series MVP.

The Cubs also agreed to a $2.7 million, two-year deal with catcher Henry Blanco and agreed to a $2.5 million, one-year deal with second baseman Todd Walker that includes an option for 2006. The Cubs' option is at $2.5 million, and Walker has vesting options at $2.5 million and $2.75 million based on plate appearances.

"With Nomar and I coming back and the pitching staff we have coming back, we're in good position already," Walker said. "We left some unfinished business out there, and I think this year we're going to take care of it."

The Cubs also offered arbitration to right-hander Matt Clement and outfielder Todd Hollandsworth. They did not offer it to left fielder Moises Alou; second baseman Mark Grudzielanek; outfielders Tom Goodwin and Ben Grieve; shortstop Ramon Martinez; catcher Paul Bako; or left-hander Kent Mercker.

Garciaparra is a two-time AL batting champion and a career .322 hitter with 182 home runs and 710 RBI. But he played only 81 games last year because of Achilles' tendon, left wrist and groin injuries.

"There's not a long history of a lot of missed games. The years he's been healthy, he's played a lot of games and he's played pretty hard," general manager Jim Hendry said. "Both sides agreed that Nomar's value on a multiyear deal would only be enhanced by him coming back and playing, and playing a lot.

"I think a short-term deal worked well for him, too," Hendry added. "He is very happy."

And after the last, tumultuous season, happiness means a lot.

Garciaparra spent the first 8? years of his career with the Boston Red Sox. He was a fan favorite, with everyone from little kids to old ladies sporting his jersey, and the Boston faithful greeting him with cheers of "Nomah!" whenever he stepped to the plate.

But when the Red Sox tried to acquire Alex Rodriguez from Texas last offseason, they dangled Garciaparra as bait. The deal didn't come together, but Garciaparra's feelings were still hurt. Though he said he still wanted to finish his career with the Red Sox, he turned down a $60 million, four-year extension last winter and it seemed a matter of when, not if, he would leave Boston.

On July 31, the Red Sox sent Garciaparra to the Cubs as part of a four-team trade.

"He was very happy to be here," Hendry said. "Genuinely happy with how well he was received by the fans and his teammates."

In his first game at the Wrigley Field, he was cheered during pregame stretching, batting practice and before every at-bat. Catcher Michael Barrett gave up No. 5 -- though Barrett did make Garciaparra promise to seriously consider returning to the Cubs.

"I really enjoyed my time there," Garciaparra said. "I know we have a great chance of winning and winning the whole thing, and that's what I want to be a part of. That's something that's important to me."

Though Garciaparra had to watch from afar when the Red Sox won the World Series and finally ended 86 years of frustration, he said he was thrilled for his old team.

"I was really pulling for my teammates there," he said. "I'll always have great ties to that city. To see them do that, I was definitely happy for them and rally, really excited for them and that city."

Garciaparra hit .308 with nine homers and 41 RBI with Boston and Chicago. He's hit .300 or better in seven seasons, and had a career-best 30-game hitting streak in 1997.

He's been to the playoffs three times, and set an American League division series record in 1998 with 11 RBI in four games.

"This is a great, great player," said Hendry, who flew out to California to woo Garciaparra. "Unfortunately, we only saw a good player, we didn't see the Nomar we all know if he's completely healthy, the guy that won the batting title. His track record speaks for itself."

Walker was close to signing with Texas, but said Chicago was where he really wanted to be.

"I was scared [the Rangers] were going to give us what I wanted because in my gut I wanted to come back to Chicago," he said.

Walker was stellar as a backup to Grudzielanek last year, hitting .323 the first month of the season. The left-hander hit .294 in 60 games as leadoff hitter, with a .370 on-base percentage.

He also was solid defensively, committing just seven errors in 749 1-3 innings.

"We've got a great bunch of guys that just want to win and we've got the talent to do it," Walker said. "We're going to have just as good a chance winning the World Series as I thought we had last year."

Cubs scouts had Blanco rated as the best defensive catcher on the market. Forced into a starting role with the Twins after Joe Mauer tore cartilage in his knee, Blanco compiled a .991 fielding percentage last season, committing just seven errors in 737 chances. He threw out 25 of 56 (45 percent) attempted basestealers, and has thrown out 41 percent for his career.

The 33-year-old Blanco appeared in 114 games last year with the Minnesota Twins, batting .206 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI.

ESPN.com senior writer Jayson Stark and information from the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Week of June 14th 2004 - From ESPN.com

2B Mark Grudzielanek, who went on the disabled list April 10 with a partial tear of his right Achilles tendon, is planning to return June 19 against the A's, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Manager Dusty Baker is looking forward to regaining Grudzielanek's demeanor as well as his skills. "We have a mellow team," he told the newspaper. ''Grud brings us fire and wildness."

RHP Kerry Wood threw off a bullpen mound June 14 for the first time since he went on the disabled list May 12 with a right triceps strain, the Sun-Times reported. Wood is no longer feeling the kind of discomfort that forced him to the sidelines. ''It's more a little bit of tightness,'' he told the newspaper. ''But stiffness is fine. I can pitch with stiffness. You don't have to be concerned about that." Wood plans to return for another bullpen session on the mound June 16.

RHP Mark Prior pitched five shutout innings in his third start since coming off the DL, ending Roger Clemens' unbeaten streak at 13 games with a 7-2 win over the Astros on June 14. Prior allowed only five hits and struck out eight, denying his childhood idol a chance to become the first pitcher in the big leagues with 10 wins. "Going against someone that's going into the Hall of Fame it was just nice to beat him," said Prior. "It's pretty special because he doesn't give up many runs."

Sammy Sosa expects to be back in Chicago on June 18 to play against Oakland. Sosa made his second rehab start Double-A West Tenn on June 15. He has been out of action for the Cubs since May 16 with a sprained ligament in his back brought on by sneezing.

Ricky Gutierrez signed a one-year, minor league deal June 14. Gutierrez, who played for the Cubs from 2000-2001, became a free agent last month after starting 14 games at second base for the Mets. He hit .175 in 24 games. The Mets acquired Gutierrez from Cleveland on March 28.

Week of June 18th 2004 - From ESPN.com

Injured RHP Kerry Wood did not pitch a simulated game June 20, opting instead for two throwing sessions on the bullpen mound, the Arlington Heights Daily Herald reported. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild felt Wood needed to get though another side session before taking the next step in his rehabilitation process. Wood threw a light bullpen session June 18. "I said, 'You know, you've only had one real good side. We need to do a few more,'" Rothschild told Wood. "I thought it was better that he just did a side and made sure the mechanics were where they needed to be."

RHP Carlos Zambrano was dizzy with a headache before he took the mound against the A's on June 20. He felt much better afterward. Zambrano allowed one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings June 20 against the A's -- a 5-3 Cubs win -- lowering his ERA to 2.25, second-best in the NL behind Tom Glavine. "I wasn't feeling good," said the 23-year-old, who has won four straight decisions and has allowed two or fewer runs in 11 of 14 starts this season. "I was feeling good throwing the ball, but I was sick."

Week of July 11th 2004 - From ESPN.com

RHP Kerry Wood came off the disabled list and was solid as the Cubs defeated the Cardinals 8-4 on July 11. Wood, sidelined since May 11 with triceps tendinitis, gave up one run and three hits in five innings with five strikeouts and two walks. He threw 80 pitches in his first victory since beating the Mets with seven shutout innings on April 24. "He was such a huge part of last year," said C Michael Barrett. "I wasn't there but I can sort of sense what he means to this team. It's nice to have him back and it kind of rubbed off on everybody."

With Alex Gonzalez slated to return from his rehab stint at Triple-A Iowa in another week, the Cubs may be seeking to package him in a deal for another shortstop, the Chicago Tribune reported. General manager Jim Hendry declined to discuss a report that the Cubs have spoken to Montreal about 29-year-old Orlando Cabrera, who's hitting .286 in July after a rough start. The Cubs likely would have to give up a decent pitching prospect along with Gonzalez, who will become a free agent at the end of the year and isn't in the team's 2005 plans.

Week of September 5th 2004 - From ESPN.com

Borowski case closed?

Joe Borowski returned from his minor-league rehab stint Sept. 7 and threw off a bullpen mound at Wrigley Field for the first time since his shoulder injury in early June, the Chicago Tribune reported. Does the closer have a chance at returning this year? "It's hard to tell," pitching coach Larry Rothschild told the newspaper. "It's probably not likely." Rothschild said Borowski would go on a throwing program for the final month of the regular season to try and build up his arm strength: "We'll look to the future, whether it's next year or late this year."

And..# RF Sammy Sosa was back in the starting lineup Sept. 8 against the Expos after missing two games because of bursitis in his right hip.

# RHP Matt Clement had to leave in the third inning of the Sept. 7 game agains the Expos because of muscle stiffness and discomfort in his back and neck. The 2 2/3 innings were Clement's shortest outing of the season. He lasted just 4 1/3 innings in his previous start against Houston and said he had a strained neck and upper back.

# The Cubs and Marlins will play two doubleheaders to make up the three-game series (Sept. 3-5) that was wiped out in Miami by Hurricane Frances. One game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Sept. 10 at Wrigley Field. The remaining two games were scheduled as a doubleheader on Sept. 20 at Pro Player Stadium in Miami.
